John tasting wineJohn Anthony Truchard, CEO and Founder John Anthony Family of Wines, started out farming in the Napa Valley wine region he loves. John learned in the vineyards of his parents’ property Truchard Vineyards. From farmer, John began his collection of estate wines John Anthony Vineyards and established himself as vintner hell bent on making the highest-quality wines regardless of price. Today his model for winemaking has breadth from small case lot Napa Valley Reserves, to California grocery store brands outpacing the market.

John farming

John farmed his family’s vineyards at Truchard estate, a pioneering winery in Napa Valley

VineyardJohn decided to build a wine business while in school. In his early 20’s, John had a lot of time but little money. Employing the farming skills he’d learned, John started a vineyard management business. With funds realized from growing grapes for others, he began planting his own vineyards. Instead of investing in land and winery infrastructure he utilized his vineyard management relationships to develop long-term leases where he could select prime locations for ideal planting and growing.

John’s farming experience led him to select Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhône clones for John Anthony Vineyards. He guides them into elegant, place-driven wines that celebrate their unique character.

VineyardJohn’s meticulously-tended Napa Valley estate vineyards provide premium fruit for John Anthony Vineyards, which had its first vintage in 2003. The wines quickly garnered acclaim putting John Anthony wines on the map as a prestigious producer. Further expanding the business, John then began making classic chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon from some of his farming clients’ best vineyard blocks. Calling the new label FARM Napa Valley by John Anthony, these modestly-priced Napa Valley wines are a testament to the farmer’s unsung role in crafting great wines.

John Anthony collection

The John Anthony collection includes: Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines for distribution. as well as ultra small batch wines for direct sale.

JaM CollectionIn 2008 in the wake of the economic downturn, John resolved to find a way to make great-quality wines accessible to more people. The result was luscious, fruit-forward wine, JaM Cabernet under the JaM Cellars brand (JaM is short for John and Michele). The rich quality and price point prompted expansion to a creamy chardonnay called Butter Chardonnay. Toast Sparkling was a fast follow and California Candy Dry Rosé launched in 2018. In 2019 both Butter and Candy were made available in cans. JaM Cellars’ easy-to-love, every day Californian wines more than live up to their names.
